It occurs in gray and rufous plumage forms.
Calls from four owl species, including the Collared Owlet, were recorded throughout a full year at Yushan National Park in Taiwan. Researchers examined how calling rates related to moonlight, the moon's position, time, and weather. The owls living in the same forest did not all respond to lunar conditions and night-time periods in the same way.
The Collared Owlet called more often near the full moon and when the moon was high in the sky. Its calling also increased around twilight. The other three species showed different patterns: one was more active near both new and full moons, while two showed no significant response to lunar phase.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
A full year of recordings at Yushan National Park found more Collared Owlet calling near the full moon, when the moon was higher, and around twilight.
