The Sunda Owlet is a very small owl of hill and montane forest on Sumatra and Borneo. In 2021, the eBird taxonomy separated it from the widespread Collared Owlet based on voice and plumage.
At about 14–16 cm, it is a tiny, boldly marked owl. Eye-like marks appear on the back of its head; a field guide suggests they might deter attacks from behind, but presents this as a possibility.
It inhabits hill and montane forest and eats insects and small birds. It may be active by day as well as at night; its repeated whistled call can draw flocks of small birds that mob it.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
