The Providence Petrel ranges over open water from the southwest Pacific to the North Pacific and Bering Sea. It breeds only on Lord Howe Island and Phillip Island in the Norfolk Island group.
It is a heavy-bodied petrel with a stout bill. Its plumage is mostly dark grey-brown, with a brown head and a scaly white face pattern.
It breeds in winter in burrows or rock cavities. At sea it feeds mainly on squid and fish, with crustaceans a smaller part of the diet. Nest sites differ between the forested Lord Howe Island and rocky Phillip Island.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
