This monarch ranges across islands from Indonesia to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. It inhabits open island forests, and plumage tones vary among island subspecies.
Two birds observed on Cassini Island in 2010 had gunmetal-grey heads, backs, and breasts, with rufous underparts from the lower breast to the tail coverts and white flecks among the ventral feathers. Island subspecies vary in color, so this observation should not be generalized to every individual.
It uses open island forest and is recorded as gleaning invertebrates in trees. Oiseaux.net treats it as a sedentary species.
