The Hooded Monarch occurs on New Guinea. A regional account from Mimika describes it in lowland forest and records different plumage in adults and immatures.
The Mimika guide describes adults as glossy blue-black, with white on the belly, lower breast and flanks. Immatures are grey with a pale ochre belly.
The Mimika account places the species in the lower and lower-middle storeys of lowland forest.
