The Hainan gymnure is a small, stocky gymnure with a slightly thick, pointed snout. A 2018 study documented it in northern Vietnam as well as on Hainan Island.
Published specimens measure 120–147 mm from head to body, with tails of 30–43 mm. The back is dull olive-brown, while the underside is paler and yellowish.
Five specimens collected in northern Vietnam came from evergreen mixed forest at 300–700 m elevation. The report does not describe their daily behavior or diet.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
