A kingfisher of Niau Atoll in French Polynesia. A field study linked island occurrence with open understory, hunting perches and coconut groves where the ground was exposed.
It is about 17 cm long, with bright blue back, wings, tail and crown and a white belly. Rusty colour on the head and neck varies; the sexes look alike.
It occurs in coconut groves and native feo forest on Niau. It hunts lizards and small arthropods from perches and nests in standing dead trees. The study also reported territoriality and site fidelity.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
