This bat is recorded in Madagascar’s Central Highlands. A 2009 study split the former broad M. manavi group and treated Central Highlands animals as M. manavi sensu stricto.
Specimens assigned to this species in the study had a blackish back and paler underside. A red color form has reddish-brown fur.
One specimen identified as M. manavi by DNA was captured in Grotte de Fandanana. The paper notes day roosts of Miniopterus bats in this cave, but does not confirm that this specimen’s species roosts there.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
