This broad-nosed bat is recorded from Mexico through Central America to northern South America west of the Andes. A 2010 revision separated species from the older broad P. helleri complex.
The 2010 revision describes dorsal fur from pale to dark brown, a pale-gray underside, and a narrow white stripe along the back.
At Lamanai, Belize, three tracked bats day-roosted in tangles of leaves and vines. A bat was once found resting beneath a disused bird nest.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
