The Ampurta (Dasycercus hillieri) is a small carnivorous marsupial of arid central Australia. A 2023 specimen review separated the living population long treated as D. cristicauda as this species.
The tail is reddish brown near the body and black over roughly its outer two-thirds, where long hairs form a dorsal crest. The Ampurta is larger than the other living species in its genus, D. blythi, and also differs in cranial and dental features. A crested tail alone is not unique to this species.
A 2025 study places this species mainly in the Simpson–Strzelecki Dunefield. In areas where it occurs alongside D. blythi, it is described as using sand ridges with an understorey dominated by spinifex grasses (Triodia). This is a habitat account for areas of overlap, not a claim about habitat choice or diet throughout its range.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
