The Yellow-eyed Junco lives in mountain forests from the southwestern United States through Mexico to Guatemala. Its yellow-orange eyes, gray head, and reddish-brown back stand out.
Adults have yellow-orange eyes, a gray head, a two-toned bill, and a reddish-brown back. White outer tail feathers flash as they fly.
It searches leaf litter and the ground for seeds, insects, and spiders, sometimes scratching with one foot. It eats more insects and spiders in summer and more seeds in winter, and nests on the ground near grass clumps or cover.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
