The bird-like noctule is a large bat distributed in Japan. It spends the day in cavities in large trees and catches flying insects in the evening.
Among bats in Japan's Vespertilionidae, it is described as large, with dark brown fur and narrow, long wings.
It rests in tree cavities by day and emerges at dusk to catch flying insects. In central Hokkaido, feces from one pregnant female captured by day from a bat box in 2017 contained DNA of Locustella ochotensis. On 18 October 2023 at the Tsugaru Strait observation site, a bat was recorded catching a Japanese Bush Warbler in the air and subsequently dropping it. DNA from this bird’s wound matched Nyctalus aviator, identifying one aerial capture by this species.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
