  • White-browed Tit Poecile superciliosus

This small bird of western China's mountain forests has a long white eyebrow and rusty-brown cheeks and breast. It conceals its nest in old rodent burrows or rock crevices on the ground.

  • Pine Vole Microtus (Pitymys) pinetorum

A small vole that moves through leaf litter and soil in deciduous forests. In autumn it stores roots and shoots in burrows for winter shortages.

  • Ochre-cheeked Spinetail Synallaxis scutata

A furnariid of South America. In southeastern Peru it forages in dense understory along forest edges and in second growth.

  • South African Ground Squirrel Xerus (Geosciurus) inauris

This squirrel lives in the dry grasslands and savannas of southern Africa. It uses underground burrows and searches for food by day.

  • Mountain Quail Oreortyx pictus

The Mountain Quail is a western North American quail with long, slender head plumes. It uses mountain forests and brush at lower elevations in different seasons.

  • Eastern Mole Vole Ellobius (Ellobius) tancrei

The eastern mole vole is a burrowing rodent recorded in Mongolia's dry steppes and semideserts. Its short tail and other features are shared within the genus and do not identify this species by themselves.

  • Clarion Wren Troglodytes tanneri

This wren is restricted to Clarion Island, Mexico. It lives in open habitats and nests in cavities among volcanic rock or sand, as well as holes in human-made structures.

  • Washington Ground Squirrel Urocitellus washingtoni

The Washington ground squirrel lives in grasslands from eastern Washington to north-central Oregon. It has short legs and rounded ears, and spends the long winter underground.

  • Orange River White-eye Zosterops pallidus

The Orange River White-eye is a white-eye of arid southern Africa. It moves through foliage in flocks and feeds on insects and fruit.

  • Bryant's Woodrat Neotoma (Neotoma) bryanti

Its range extends from coastal California to the southern tip of Baja California and includes islands. A California study recorded it on a boulder-strewn hill.

  • Fulvous Colilargo Oligoryzomys fulvescens

The fulvous colilargo is a small rodent. A night survey recorded animals moving among ground-level weeds and climbing among the dry leaves of a felled tree.

  • Greater Lophorina Lophorina latipennis

It lives in montane forest on New Guinea, and the sexes look very different. The male has a black body with metallic green-blue ornaments; the female is brown and patterned.
