The ornate flying fox is a large bat endemic to New Caledonia, with long reddish fur and a pale collar behind the neck. It usually rests in groups by day and searches for food at night.
Adults have reddish-brown fur, a whitish head, and a paler collar behind the neck. The long hair gives the coat a somewhat tousled look.
It usually rests with others at a roost by day and flies out at night to forage. It eats flowers, fruit, and leaves, but plant records have not been separated from those of another flying fox on the island.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
