The Indian Skimmer has a lower bill longer than the upper one. Outside the breeding season its plumage is duller, with browner upperparts.
Adults have black upperparts and white forehead, collar and underparts. The stout orange bill has a yellow tip, and its lower mandible is longer.
During breeding, Indian Skimmers nest in colonies on exposed sandbars and islands. They eat fish, small crustaceans and insect larvae.
