This waterbird has a lower bill longer than the upper one. It flies close to the surface with the lower bill in the water to catch small fish.
The slender orange bill has a projecting lower mandible. Dark upperparts contrast with a white underside.
It skims calm water for small fish. When falling water exposes sandbars in the dry season, it nests in shallow hollows in the sand.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
