The red-nosed bearded saki feeds on fruit and nuts in the canopy forests of South America.
It has black fur, a red nose and upper lip edged with white fur, and a long bushy tail.
The red-nosed cuxiu is an Amazonian primate that specializes in seeds from hard-husked unripe fruit. At a mid-Rio Tapajós site in Brazil, Barnett and colleagues compared bite marks and husk penetrability in 27 fruit species eaten by the monkeys. Seventeen had sutures, including six with fused sutures; ten had no sutures.
On eight of the eleven fruits with functioning seams, bite marks clustered along the seam. For nine of the ten fruits without seams, bites did not cluster at the thinnest part of the husk. The pattern shows how the cuxiu's bite locations vary with fruit structure.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
At a mid-Rio Tapajós site in Brazil, a study of 27 hard-husked fruit species found cuxiu bite marks clustered along the seams in eight of the eleven species with functioning seams, documenting a link between fruit structure and seed feeding.
