MDD currently places the Black-and-red Free-tailed Bat in Mops; the 2004 description used Chaerephon. A later survey in Madagascar's dry-forest region caught it only within protected areas.
The original description reports short, mottled brown fur and uses pelage and wing colour among the features separating the species from relatives.
In a survey of Madagascar's dry-forest region published in 2025, researchers captured the species only inside protected areas. The study gathered faecal samples from several bat species but does not establish a species-specific diet or roost pattern for jobimena.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
